Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Soils Limited is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Winchester and support our ongoing growth.

Soils Limited was founded in 1982 by Nick Lambert and Rob Higginson and now works on projects across the country from our offices in Surrey, Hampshire and Cornwall. We are a Geotechnical and Environmental Consultancy, and in the last 5 years have built an in-house team of technicians with our own drilling rigs to service our projects.

Our Principal Engineers and Geologists are critical to the company’s technical development and output. The successful candidate will provide technical support to both our office and site-based teams, tackling engineering problems across a wide range of market sectors. You will become an integral part of the company, mixing engineering with project management, mentoring and providing input to the company’s strategic development.

The role reports to the Engineering Lead – an Associate Director with overall responsibility for the engineering teams and all technical output of the company.

Hours: 40 working hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Location: This role will be located at our office in Winchester, SO23 0LB.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing technical reports and reviewing the work of others;

  • Lead project meetings and client interactions as the Project Manager;

  • Mentoring and supporting the engineering teams;

  • Fostering a culture of engineering excellence and adherence to industry and company standards among junior team members;

  • Coordinate and support the delivery of reporting and design packages;

  • Assist with tender submissions and produce detailed geotechnical proposals.

Ideal Candidate:

  • MSc / MEng or above in Geotechnical Engineering or a related subject;

  • CGeol or CEng status;

  • Technical experience to include:

    • Planning, execution and supervision of site investigation works.

    • Managing geotechnical projects of various sizes across multi-sectors

    • Geotechnical design of various foundation types of various structures

    • Proficient user of relevant geotechnical design software – Geostru, Plaxis, Flac, PDisp, Wallap, etc.

    • Site engineering and practical support to construction works.

    • Awareness and experience of managing commercial risk on projects;

    • Eager and able to manage their workload and balance and prioritise a range of tasks and priorities;

  • Extensive experience in the area of geotechnical engineering

    • Geotechnical design report

    • Earthworks specifications and design

    • Slope stability assessment and reporting

    • Checking and validating design reports

    • EC7 design and validation

    • Basement Impact Assessments

    • Ground Movement Assessments

    • Working platform design.

  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and solutions to a range of expertise and backgrounds;

  • Strong client-facing communication skills;

  • Experience and understanding of the importance of mentoring and training junior staff.

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent Location: Winchester, SO23 0LB. Reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Annual Salary: From £50,000 to £65,000 dependent on experience.
